Water Sports
As Lake Fleesensee is shallow enough to stand up in as far as 300 metres away from the shore, it is ideal for windsurfing and sailing lessons.
The shallow bay is ideal for this purpose because the water is too shallow for motor boots. Temperatures of 28°C have been recorded here on warm summer days. The lake bed is sandy just like the Baltic Sea and the water is clear and clean, as it is everywhere in the Lake District. Children can safely bathe here and it takes half the time to learn how to windsurf as well as being less tiring because if you fall in the water, you can still stand up. The children's sailing courses can take place in the shallow water. Courses take place daily in the summer holidays. The basic courses begin twice a week (Tuesday and Sunday) and learners take a test at the end of the course to gain an internationally valid surfing or sailing certificate. Courses are available for youngsters from the age of 7 as children's sailing courses in Optimist sailing dinghies, you can learn windsurfing from the age of 10 and catamaran sailing from the age of 12. There are, of course, windsurfing and catamaran sailing courses for adults too. You can learn sailing or windsurfing within 3 days in three-hour training units. The children's courses start every Tuesday or Sunday from 10.30 a.m. with a free taster lesson, the adults' courses start every Tuesday and Sunday from 12 noon with a free taster lesson. New on Lake Fleesensee: stand up paddle surfing. Stand up paddle surfing has its origin in Tahiti where Polynesian fishermen paddled around the island in a standing position. This technique is now used on our waters. Under a light wind, you paddle on special boards using a fairly long paddle through the lake scenery. It is also easy for non-surfers to learn as the boards are very stable.
